The new season opened with a marked increase in membership.
The guest speaker Dr John Surtees gave a masterly review of the astonishing development of medical research during Victorian times.
With the aid of slides he covered multi-facets from obstetrics and orthopaedics to the discoveries of Louis Pasteur
(modern bacteriology) and Joseph Lister (antiseptic surgery); neither was the invaluable work of Florence Nightingale forgotten.
All this information was covered in a most entertaining and enjoyable manner which held his audience enthralled and will be long remembered. Dr Surtees punctured his talk with humorous witticisms including a medical version of an old music hall ditty which the audience greatly appreciated and joined in with great gusto when invited to do so.
Members are now looking forward to Victorian week when they will be joining in many of the activities that have been arranged.
The next meeting is on Tuesday October 21 at the Friends Meeting House, Wish Road, at 7pm.
They will be greeting Lady Edna Healey, who will be speaking on Angela Burdett-Courts, the Victorian philanthropist, and Charles Dickens. For further details telephone Anna on 646659 or Maggie on 471615.
