EASTBOURNE Technology College and Causeway schools recently held an engineering challenge involving eggs, straws, paper plates and marshmallows in an event aimed at bonding students from schools in the Eastbourne and Hailsham Federation who have chosen to do a diploma in engineering next year.
The students had to build a tower that would support an egg for eight seconds minimum and local business people acted as judges with ex-ETC students taking on the role of facilitators with four students from the Student Associate Scheme who are having a taste of teaching.
The diploma is part of the much anticipated changes in educational qualifications with this one being co-delivered by ETC, Causeway and Sussex Downs College.
ETC assistant head teacher Jane McCluskey said, "This was a really successful event, the students enjoyed themselves and the employers were impressed with the ideas the students came up with and how quickly they gelled as teams.
"ETC is really grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by our local employers for these new diplomas."
Among the representatives from local businesses were Mel Hobbs from Hotchkiss Ltd, Hilary Charlton from HMD Sealless Pumps Ltd, Steve Rouse of Hailsham Roadway Construction Co Ltd and Ian Boyd from Picross Precision Engineering Co Ltd.
